Types of Roses Although there are quite a few rose classification schemes
used throughout the world, probably the most popular is that
proposed by The American Rose Society. Furthermore,
a majority of rose organizations have also adopted this scheme. Rose types
basically consist of three main groups of roses: species, old garden roses, and modern roses.
Species
These roses are usually referred to as "wild roses." They are easy to identify
because they usually have five petals, bloom once per season, and are frequently thorny shrubs or climbers.
Popular species roses are Gallic Roses, Cherokee Roses, Dog Roses, Red Leaf Roses, and French Roses.
Species roses flourish in temperate climates throughout the Northern Hemisphere.

Old Garden Roses
Old garden roses were first identified in the late 1800s, while species roses have existed for millions of years before humans inhabited the earth. Old garden roses
usually bloom once a season, primarily at the start of summer.
This group commonly grows in several sizes of shrubs and vines, with blooms that are usually white or pastel in color. Also called "antique roses,"
they are generally preferred for lawns and home gardens, because they are easy to grow.
Some old garden roses include China, Moss, Tea, Damask, Hybrid, Bourbon,
and Perpetual. Many antique roses have a strong, sweet smelling scent making them very popular.
Modern Roses
Any rose identified after 1867 is a modern rose. Old garden roses are
regarded as the predecessors of modern roses. This very popular group resulted from cross breeding the hybrid tea rose with the polyanthus,
a variety of primrose. Most roses in this class flower repeatedly
with the proper care, and that is why horticulturists find this class so attractive.
Roses in this group include Hybrid Tea, Floribunda, and Grandiflora. Although modern roses are adored by florists and gardeners
all over the world, they do require some extra care, and
grow best in warmer climates.
